JAGUAR
#JGR-500 Notecards

The jaguar is the largest and most powerful of the new world cats — and the only one that roars. That sound strikes terror in the heart of virtually any creature that hears it from the U.S.-Mexico border to Argentina, especially within the jaguar’s preferred habitat in the lush jungles of Brazil and Central America. The jaguar can agilely climb a tree to catch monkeys or birds, plunge into a river and swim skillfully in pursuit of turtles or crocodiles, or sprint after calves or dogs. Its name is derived from an ancient Indian word meaning “the killer that overcomes its prey in a single leap.”

A mature jaguar may be about 6 feet long, excluding the tail, and 2 feet high. It sports a rich yellow to rusty-red coat with large black rosettes. Occasionally, jaguars are black. They have lived up to 22 years in captivity.
