The Vines Convocation Center
Lynchburg, Virginia
#NC-01150-ED - Notecards
#PR-01150-ED - Open Edition Print

It’s hard to miss The Vines Convocation Center. Just head for the striking silver dome, constructed with 10-foot triangular aluminum sections, in the heart of Lynchburg. Beneath the dome is one of the largest on-campus basketball arenas in the state of Virginia.

The facility seats 9,000 for basketball and 10,000 for such special events as graduation, convocation and concerts. From 1995 to 1998, the Big South Conference held its annual tournament at The Vines Center. Attendance at the tournament has been as high as 8,343 for men’s games and 5,117 for women’s games. The Vines Center also has hosted National Basketball Association exhibition games, the Harlem Globetrotters and high school tournaments.

Founded in 1971 by Dr. Jerry Falwell, Liberty University provides a Christian, comprehensive, coeducational environment committed to serious scholarship for nearly 6,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Students come from all 50 states and 48 countries throughout the world.

The 160-acre campus offers complete classroom, dormitory, study, leisure and recreational facilities. In addition to the basketball arena, Liberty’s athletic facilities include a 12,000-seat football stadium, a 4,000-seat gymnasium, a 1,800-seat baseball stadium that was named “Diamond of the Year” by Sportsturf magazine, an outdoor track, a 1,000-seat softball facility, and a beautiful Bermuda grass soccer field.
